I try to keep a fresh eye and open mind when looking for a stimulus to paint. Each work for me now starts with the digital camera. Having replaced the "plein air" sketch with digital photographs, I can focus on composition in the comfort of my studio. This method allows every painting to be an experiment in which the outcome is unknown. After I have selected a direction, I become anxious to move the idea to the paper, and I use a rapid rhythm approach with super-imposed color washes, and direct brush strokes to complete the transformation from idea to image.

While painting, I use my 3P approach to composition. Proportion, Placement, and Perspective are critical components of my work. While I will always interpret forms to suit my own ideals, maintaining a focus on the 3P's affords me the freedom to define the picture space as I want it. I then rely on a broad color palatte and strong contrasts in value to complete the illusion.

My goal for every painting is that it represents some small expression of the natural beauty all around us, a beauty which is found in the light that strikes every form. I am careful not to become snobbish or rigid when selecting subjects.Instead, I try to find the extraordinary nestled within the ordinary. This is done by concentrating on the play of light and shadow (both modeled and cast) with consideration for reflections which can be interpreted to unify a painting.
